They were surveyed just before the major protests and the debate around pension reform. Active people over 40 express serious concerns about their end of career, more than two-thirds of them fearing having health problems, according to a study by Credoc published on Wednesday. A study conducted every year since 1978.

The survey for The Adecco Group Foundation, carried out in January shortly after the presentation of the pension reform, shows that the fear of not being in good enough health to continue working at the end of one’s career is the main reason worry for 68% of working people aged 40 to 59. Concerns that concern more women (71%) than men (65%).

This concern concerns all professional categories, but affects manual workers (72%) more than executives (62%). Women are also more concerned (71%, compared to 65% of men). In addition to their health, 52% now fear fatigue, weariness and a loss of motivation, especially in executives.

A rising concern

3,051 people aged 15 and over were interviewed between January 13 and 26, and among them, 960 working people aged 40 to 59 who expressed their concerns, their personal and professional end-of-career goals. These fears existed before the pension reform. A study carried out by Dares published in early March showed that in 2019, 37% of employees said they did not feel able to hold on to their work until retirement.

Beyond health issues, the survey by the Research Center for the Study and Observation of Living Conditions (Credoc) shows that more than half of working people over 40 (52%) are afraid of earning less well in their lives or to no longer enjoy their work, to be bored and tired and to lose their motivation.

Next come in particular the fear of being discriminated against because of their age if they are looking for a new job (49%), the fear of stagnating or regressing in their career (38%) or of losing their job (37%). The study was carried out as part of the Credoc’s “Living conditions and aspirations of the French people” survey.
