IRCCS Policlinico di Sant’Orsola is the reference center for the development of Hugo and the first base in the world for the number of surgeries performed with the new Medtronic robotic platform.

First the kidney, then the colon. The experts ofIRCCS Sant’Orsola Polyclinic they removed two malignant tumors during the same operation thanks to the arms of Hugonew robot platform from Medtronic. The operation, performed in March on a 75-year-old patient from the Marche region, was a complete success.

Surgical teams led by professionals Matteo Rottoli e Riccardo Schiavina they managed to remove the left kidney (affected by papillary renal carcinoma) and the right colon (adenocarcinoma) during the same operation thanks to the flexibility and accuracy provided by the robotic platform. innovation that allows us to reduce the time and limit the invasiveness of operations. Thank you again for the new robot platform, installed in pavilion 5 of Sant’Orsola Hospital last year, “the patient’s trauma is less and, therefore, the recovery is faster” confirms the Professor Rottolispecialist in Alimentary Tract Surgery and Emergencies of IRCCS led by Professor Gilberto Poggioli.

The operation represents a further step forward in the recent but already consolidated history of robotic surgery in Bologna. It is not by chance that IRCCS was chosen by Medtronic as one of the few Italian reference companies for the further development of the robotic system. There are many areas of research on successful approaches: not only surgery of the alimentary intake – the Professor Rottoli he is the surgeon who has performed the highest number of bowel reconstructions in the world with Hugo and, in general, IRCCS is a reference center for surgical training and the development of new robotic technologies – but also one, gynecological, gynecological – oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedic, pediatric, breast, head and neck, thoracic and urological. “Thanks to the flexibility, great flexibility and low costs of the platform, the interventions that can be done with the robot are constantly increasing,” explained Professor SchiavinaDr. Urology led Professor Eugenio Brunocilla. “Also, thanks to the open console, the new robot allows us to increase the possibility of training in the surgical field because more surgeons have access to the 3D screen and can easily pass the instruments for learning several steps of the operation”.

Sant’Orsola, the robot hospital

“Hugo“Last year it became part of an already well-defined tradition, next to the surgical robot”Da Vinci” – is operational Saint Ursula since 2015 – and “Da Vinci XI” is usedMaggiore Hospital for Thoracic Surgery and General Surgery dell’IRCCS.

In recent years, the increase in the number of machines has gone hand in hand with the constant growth of robotic surgeries performed: from 167 in 2015 to 1,050 in 2023 (+38% over 2022).

The use of robotic platforms allows us to reduce the need for revision surgery, infection rates, complications and, therefore, hospital length. Moreover, the possibility of viewing and updating 3D models in real time during operation increases the benefits of robotic surgery and the possibilities of saving organs to expand in several areas.

In general, this method guarantees a less invasive procedure and a better visualization, as well as greater maneuverability for surgeons. The benefits, therefore, are tangible both from the point of view of the patient (both in terms of reduction of post-operative pain and rapid recovery) and of the operators.

The program”Hugo”, in particular, stands out for having an open console. This configuration can improve communication between the surgeon and the operating room staff and their ability to control everything that happens on the operating table. Its arms are also attached to individual trolleys that can be brought to the work table separately. This interaction affects the usability of the robot especially when the surgeon is working with a smaller operating space.

Other excellence: advanced endoscopy

Not all. In total, the 75-year-old from the Marche region was diagnosed with not two, but three primary malignant tumors. In addition to the two carcinomas removed with robotic surgery, in fact, a cancerous polyp on the left side of the colon was removed full thickness through endoscopic surgery by Dr. Marco Bisello. “One process – finish them Professor Poggioli – which makes it possible to avoid the total removal of the colon. The patient turned to us precisely because we are a referral center for advanced endoscopic surgery.

“This case shows once again the importance of robotics and multidisciplinarity – finish it Professor Brunocilla – skills that have long been part of the philosophy of the IRCCS Policlinico di Sant’Orsola and which become a basis that increases every day to limit the bullying of interventions”.
