Hours apart, two volcanoes erupted in Italy. The first of these was Mount Etna. The second was Stromboli. Both are located in the region of Sicily (Italy) and just 180 km away from each other.

A double eruption in Italy leaves Sicilian residents on alert

  • Etna has documented eruptions since 425 BC;
  • oh g1 reported that Etna ash covered the streets and runways at Catania airport (Italy), preventing landings and takeoffs there;
  • Afterwards, Stromboli caused a heat cloud up to 2 km high;
  • Due to the second eruption in three days, the local Civil Defense raised the alert status from orange to red;
  • Meanwhile, authorities are studying how best to eradicate the endangered population;
  • Although Stromboli’s magma is 200 km deep, Etna is much closer to the surface: it lies just 30 km below;
  • Scientists claim that despite being close and having erupted within a few days of each other, this was just a coincidence.

Etna, according to News of the Euro, 3.3 km high and was dormant for four years, but volcanic activity in one of the volcano’s openings, known as “Boca Nova”, has been increasing for some time. It is one of the oldest vents on Etna and is collapsing under its own weight as it fills with lava and debris.

Stromboli, also according to News of the Euro, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, providing regular eruptions, however, less than the one that started this Friday (5). Unlike its “counterpart” that “lives” nearby, Stromboli has been active for thousands of years.

His column of ash rose to a height of two kilometers. The lava flowed from the volcano towards the sea along the Sciara del Fuaco, a basin located on the island where the volcano is located and is an attraction for tourists.

Italian media outlets have reported that the local fire department has stepped up monitoring of Stromboli as it becomes more active. The Italian coastguard has also increased its patrols, bringing in more boats and aircraft.
