The 2023 Awards of the World Summit on the Information Society selected two Cuban projects as champions, according to the state newspaper Granma.
The event, organized by the International Telecommunication Union, chooses five champion projects per category after the initial nominations.
In the case of the island, the Cuban Cultural Billboard – La Papeleta was selected, in the category of Cultural Diversity and Identity, Linguistic Diversity; and Young Ecological Mobile Club, in Information and communications infrastructure.
According to Granma, a final winner will be chosen from these “champions” in each category and will be announced next March during a ceremony within the World Summit Forum on the Information Society.
This was also announced from her Facebook profile by the Vice Minister of Communications of Cuba, Grisel Reyes León, who assured that “both projects contribute to Education and digital culture, inclusive and with a public service focus.”
The report from the aforementioned state media also reported that 2021 was the last time that Cuba won with a project, on that occasion in the Media category.
The World Summit on the Information Society is focused on the social aspects of the latter and aims to eliminate the digital divide in access to information and communications technologies in the world, specifically Telecommunications and the Internet.
In addition, the event aims to prepare action plans and policies to reduce said inequality, and national governments, the private sector, organizations representing civil society, the United Nations and its specialized agencies participate.
