Type 2 diabetes is rising sharply among young adults in England, with new cases increasing by 69% for women aged 20 to 29 between 2011 and 2024. Health experts attribute this trend to rising obesity rates, warning that earlier diagnosis significantly increases the risk of long-term complications like heart disease, stroke, and blindness.
Surging Rates Among Younger Adults
New data covering the period from 2011 to 2024 reveals a stark shift in the demographics of type 2 diabetes in England. While older adults still account for the largest share of total cases, the incidence rate is falling in the 60-to-79 age bracket, where cases declined by 7% in men and 4% in women. Conversely, the condition is surging among the under-40s, a development driven heavily by increasing rates of obesity. Rates of type 2 diabetes rose on average by 2.1% per year in men and 3% per year in women aged 20 to 29, contrasted with a decline of 1.7% per year in men and 1.5% per year in women aged 60 to 79.
According to a report published in Lancet Regional Health Europe, new diagnoses in people aged 20 to 29 grew by 43% for men and 69% for women. The study is the first to examine trends in new cases of type 2 diabetes across the English population, broken down by age, sex, and ethnicity. The research highlights that the average increase in body mass index (BMI) among younger adults diagnosed with the condition was double that of older patients. Dr. Shivani Misra, the study lead from Imperial College London, stated: “We have known for a long time that obesity is linked to type 2 diabetes, but what is new from this study is the scale of the change occurring in younger adults. We think that the earlier onset of severe obesity in young people is increasing their type 2 diabetes risk in early life and pulling down their age at diagnosis.”
The Health Risks of Early-Onset Diabetes
Medical experts warn that the shift toward earlier onset is deeply concerning
because the disease can behave more aggressively in younger patients. A younger diagnosis provides more time for the condition to cause long-term organ damage, including risks of amputation, blindness, stroke, and heart disease. Long-term complications also include foot problems such as ulcers and infections, and sight problems such as diabetic retinopathy.

Societal Factors and the Call for Policy Change
Dr. Misra observed that young people appear to be particularly vulnerable
to the easy availability of unhealthy foods and modern lifestyles that make it difficult to get enough exercise. She added that there are many factors in society contributing to obesity, from the widespread marketing of unhealthy foods to increasingly sedentary lifestyles.

He stated that while the NHS is rolling out weight-loss support and the world-leading diabetes prevention programme—which is helping hundreds of thousands of people take small steps to manage their own health—the rising figures serve as a reminder that the condition is not just affecting middle or older ages.
The Path Forward for Prevention
NHS England estimates that 12,000 people under the age of 30 are now living with type 2 diabetes. Of the six million people in the UK living with diabetes, about 90% have the type 2 form of the disease. The focus for health authorities remains on early detection, as symptoms—such as feeling very tired, peeing more than usual, and feeling thirsty all the time—can be vital markers for diagnosis.

The data suggests that without significant changes to the food environment and public health strategy, the demographic shift in diabetes cases may continue. For now, the medical community is emphasizing that type 2 diabetes is preventable, and the current trend necessitates a pivot toward more effective treatments implemented as early as possible.
