As the heat wave that has continued for a month and Typhoon Jongdari, the 9th typhoon, have made a full-fledged impact on the Korean Peninsula, electricity demand has reached an all-time high. While electricity demand has reached its highest level since the previous day, supply reserves are maintaining a relatively stable level.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held an emergency inspection meeting at 5:00 PM on the 20th, chaired by Choi Nam-ho, Second Vice Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, to check whether there were any problems with the supply and demand of electricity due to the highest demand ever.

According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, power demand at 5 p.m. on that day reached 97.1 GW (gigawatts), surpassing the previous record of 95.6 GW on the 19th in just one day.

The ongoing heat wave and tropical nights are behind the daily record-breaking electricity demand. Furthermore, Typhoon Jongdari, which recently moved north, is directly affecting Jeju Island starting today, and hot and humid weather is continuing inland.

It is common for the heat to subside when a typhoon brings rain, but this typhoon is expected to make the perceived temperature feel even higher because it carries hot, humid air from the south.

The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasted this morning, “As Typhoon No. 9 Jongdari moves northward, Jeju Island and the Jeollanam-do region will gradually be affected starting today,” and “Heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning will fall along with gusts of wind.”

In addition, the heavy rain forecast for Jeju Island and the southern region appears to have affected the renewed demand for electricity. Since most solar power generation is concentrated in the southern region, cloudy weather inevitably reduces power generation significantly.

An official from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy explained, “As hot and humid air flowed in, the entire country was hot and the demand surged due to the cloudy weather in the Honam region, where solar power facilities are concentrated, which led to low solar power generation.”

As of 5 p.m., when demand reached its highest ever, the power supply capacity recorded 105.4 GW. Accordingly, the reserve capacity was confirmed to be 8.2 GW, and the power supply reserve ratio was confirmed to be 8.5%.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy sees a supply reserve of 8.5% as a stable level. Power authorities issue a ‘preparation’ stage when the reserve is less than 5.5 GW.

Power authorities predict that high levels of power demand will continue through this week due to the typhoon. However, the analysis is that there will be no problems with supply and demand as the power supply reserves are being operated stably.

Vice Minister Choi Nam-ho said, “Even in situations where electricity demand is increasing, we have secured additional supply capacity through flexible operation of the transmission grid,” and “We have been able to secure stable reserve capacity thanks to cooperation in reducing demand, such as energy conservation in public institutions and adjustment of operating rates for businesses.”
