As Typhoon No. 11 ‘Yagi (Capricorn, the name submitted by Japan)’ is expected to make landfall in the areas of Qionghai, Hainan Province and Tianbai, Guangdong Province in China on the afternoon of the 6th, the meteorological authorities have issued a red typhoon warning, the highest level, and are on high alert.

On the 5th, the China Central Meteorological Observatory (equivalent to the central government) issued a typhoon red warning at 6:00 am (local time).

The Korea Meteorological Administration said, “The typhoon’s maximum wind speed at the time of landfall is estimated to reach 52 to 58 meters per second, which is equivalent to a super typhoon.”

He continued, “The typhoon is expected to move toward the Bayibuwan Sea in the early morning of the 7th and then toward the border area between China and Vietnam,” adding, “Its intensity is expected to gradually weaken.”

Authorities are on high alert amid speculation that Typhoon Yagi could be recorded as the strongest typhoon to hit China in the past decade.

According to the Central Meteorological Administration, as of 2:00 p.m. on the 5th, Typhoon Yagi was moving 540 km southeast of Xuwen County, Guangdong Province, in the South China Sea. The maximum wind speed at the center reached 58 m/s, which is typhoon-level.

Due to the influence of the typhoon, heavy rain is expected in the southern part of Huanan (including Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hainan provinces in the Pearl River Basin) and southern Yunnan Province from the afternoon of the 5th to the 8th. Heavy rain is expected in Hainan Island, southwestern Guangdong, and southern Guangxi, and rainfall in some areas is expected to reach 200-400mm.

In addition, from the afternoon of the 5th to the 7th, strong winds of magnitude 7 to 9 are expected in most waters of the South China Sea and southern China, and strong winds of magnitude 14 to 17 are possible in waters near the typhoon’s path.

Hainan and Guangdong provinces, which were affected by the typhoon, have begun active preparations.

Guangdong Province’s Zhanjiang City decided to implement the so-called “6-stop” measures, including a 5-day school closure, flight suspension, and work stoppage, and Guangdong Province’s Zhuhai City and Maoming City also announced school closures on the same day. Hong Kong announced a 6-day school closure.

Earlier, it was confirmed that at least 10 people were killed in the Philippines due to flooding and landslides caused by Typhoon Yagi.
