The Yomiuri Shimbun reported on the 3rd that a 3,000-year-old Yayoi cedar tree on Yakushima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, famous for its primeval forest, was blown down by the strong winds of Typhoon Sansan, the 10th typhoon of the season.

The newspaper quoted Kumiko Yabuta, a mountain guide on Yakushima Island, as saying that the Yayoi cedar was found broken near its roots.

It is believed that the tree fell due to strong winds from Sansan that approached the island between the 27th and 29th of last month.

The Yayoi cedar is a tree known to have lived since the Yayoi period, the Bronze and Iron Age in Japan, and is one of Japan’s representative large trees. It is 26.1 m tall and has a circumference of 8.1 m.

The primeval forest of Yakushima Island is famous as the background for director Hayao Miyazaki’s animation “Princess Mononoke.” It was also selected as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in 1993.

In Japan, where Typhoon Sansan, the 10th of this season, passed through, there was extensive damage, including landslides, river flooding, and house damage. A strange sight was also captured, with a carp found in the middle of a road flooded by rain that had been pouring down all afternoon.

According to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan, the death toll from Typhoon No. 10 was recorded as 7 in total in Aichi, Tokushima, Fukuoka, and Saga prefectures. 129 people were confirmed injured in 14 prefectures, mainly in Kyushu, and 1 person is missing in Kagoshima Prefecture. Landslides have occurred on Yakushima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture, and many areas are closed to traffic.

As Typhoon No. 10, Sansan, left significant damage in Japan and dissipated on the 3rd, Typhoon No. 11, Yagi, is coming in succession, and with the start of the autumn typhoon season, concerns about damage are expected to grow.
