(Reuters) – Tyson Foods (NYSE:) is reintroducing certain antibiotics into its chicken supply chain and will remove the “no antibiotics ever” slogan from its branded chicken products, a Tyson spokesman said. this Sunday.

This will involve drugs that the company claims are not harmful to human health.

The antibiotics Tyson plans to add to some chickens’ diets are known as ionophores, a Wall Street Journal report said Sunday, citing people familiar with the matter. This will affect all fresh, frozen and ready-to-eat products marketed under the brand.

Ionophores are mainly used to control a disease in birds called coccidiosis, maintain intestinal integrity and help provide good health to animals.

According to the article, the World Health Organization (WHO) does not consider them clinically important for the treatment of human diseases.

“Based on current science, Tyson branded products are transitioning to ‘No Medically Important Antibiotics’, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year,” said a spokesperson for Tyson Foods.

In 2017, the US meatpacker changed its retail line of chicken products to feature the company’s brand of poultry raised without any antibiotics.
