Tzuyu, a member of the group ‘Twice’, is going solo after 9 years since her debut. She is the third member to do so, following Nayeon and Jihyo. The solo debut album captures Tzuyu’s transformation from the youngest member of Twice to a solo artist. She puts aside Twice’s colors for a moment and puts on a strong and captivating charm.

At a press conference to commemorate the release of her first mini-album “About TZU,” held at Lotte Hotel World in Songpa-gu, Seoul on the 5th, Tzuyu said, “As a member of TWICE, I received a lot of love, and I thought that I would do well in releasing the solo album that I had dreamed of.”

The album title ‘About Tzu’ is a combination of the English words ‘about’ and ‘TZUYU’. It literally means that everything about Tzuyu is projected. It contains six tracks, including the title track ‘Run Away’, ‘Heartbreak In Heaven’, ‘Lazy Baby’, ‘Losing Sleep’, ‘One Love’, and ‘Fly’.

Tzuyu said, “As the youngest of Twice, people think of me as bright and cute, but I wanted to show a side of me that they haven’t seen before through this album. I showed a more mature and sexy side of me, and I also included playful and emotional ballads. I wanted to express the things I’ve felt in life in a more bold way.”

The title song ‘Run Away’ is a modern reinterpretation of the synth-pop and dance genres. The message of ‘after a long wait, I’m pouring out all my love in a way no one has ever seen before’ is expressed through Tzuyu’s delicate vocals. The lyrics were written by JYP Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer (CCO) Park Jin-young, and the music was composed by top-notch lyricists such as Johnny Simpson, who has worked with Lauv and One Republic.

Tzuyu recalled, “When I first heard ‘Run Away,’ I immediately liked it. The melody was catchy and the bass sound was really attractive.” She added, “I was worried if I could do well with this song, but I strongly recommended this song to my company because I thought I could show them a different kind of music.”

Domestic and international producers and musicians also participated in the songs included. BTOB’s Peniel and pH-1 featured in “Heartbreak in Heaven,” and global musicians such as Lost Boy and Camille, who worked with Twice on their 12th mini album “WALL FLOWER,” increased the perfection of the album.

In particular, the last track, “Fly,” is the first song that Tzuyu has written on her own since her debut. As it was her first time writing lyrics, she had a hard time choosing Korean words, but she really wanted to show her fans Tzuyu’s own lyrics. “When I first started writing lyrics, it wasn’t easy to explain it in Korean. If there was something I didn’t know, I looked it up and gradually completed it. Since it’s my own album, I wanted to share my story with my fans, so I took on the challenge of writing lyrics.”

As the third soloist from Twice, Tzuyu said that she watched the performances of female solo artists carefully. She chose Sunmi, formerly of the group ‘Wonder Girls’, as the most impressive performance. Tzuyu said, “When I watch senior Sunmi’s performances, they are very captivating and I can’t stop watching her performances.”

He continued, “I also thought about wanting to create my own stage. After seeing Nayeon and Jihyo’s pretty and cool appearances on their solo stages, I also prepared hard and became greedy.”

Tzuyu, who debuted as a member of Twice in 2015, is now in her 10th year since debut. She has set various ‘firsts for K-pop girl groups’ in Korea, Japan, the United States, etc. Tzuyu’s upcoming solo album has high expectations from fans not only in Korea but also around the world. This is also why the album release date has been set for Friday at 1 PM (midnight in Eastern Standard Time).

Previously, TWICE topped Billboard’s main album chart, Billboard 200, with their 13th mini-album “With YOU-th” in March. Nayeon and Jihyo, who released solo albums first, also achieved significant results on the same chart. Nayeon ranked 7th on Billboard 200 with both her first mini-album “IM NAYEON” and her second mini-album “NA,” while Jihyo ranked 14th on Billboard 200 with her first mini-album “ZONE.”

Although it has not yet been evaluated by the public, Tzuyu’s satisfaction is at its peak. Tzuyu said, “I am satisfied because I was able to muster up the courage to repay the fans who love me with a good image,” and “I have the confidence to learn and grow rather than worrying about what the results will be for me and thinking deeply.”
