U.S. Defense Secretary Orders American Military Ships to Move Closer to Mediterranean in Response to Hamas Attack on Israel

by time news

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered American military ships, including an aircraft carrier, to move closer to the eastern Mediterranean in response to Hamas’ unprecedented, multi-front attack on Israel. The move comes after detailed discussions with President Biden, with the goal of strengthening the Department of Defense’s posture in the region to bolster regional deterrence efforts.

The USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group, which includes the largest warship in the world, the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier, along with other military vessels, will be deployed to the region. The USS Gerald R. Ford was in the western Mediterranean when it received orders to deploy, and depending on its precise location, it may have to travel over a thousand miles.

In addition to the deployment of military ships, Austin also announced steps to augment U.S. Air Force fighter aircraft squadrons in the region. These aircraft will be stationed in bases in the Middle East, ready for operations against Iran. The U.S. will also be airlifting munitions to support the efforts.

Austin spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant to express support for the people of Israel and receive updates on Israel’s operation to restore security and safety from Hamas’ terrorist attack. Both officials will remain in close contact in the days and weeks ahead.

The announcement by Austin came shortly after President Biden spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. They discussed Hamas’ taking of Israeli hostages, and Biden assured Netanyahu that U.S. assistance for the Israel Defense Forces was on its way, with more to follow over the coming days. The President emphasized the importance of standing united against terrorism.

Austin confirmed that the first movement of U.S. security aid to the IDF will begin moving Sunday and arrive in the coming days. The U.S. will continue to work closely with Israeli counterparts to provide the necessary support to protect their citizens and defend against the terrorist attacks.

Israeli officials have confirmed that at least 600 Israeli civilians and members of the military have died since Hamas launched its attack from Gaza. Another 1,800 have been wounded, and there have been reports of Israeli hostages, including Americans. The U.S. is investigating these reports but has not yet planned any evacuation of American citizens.

In Gaza, the Ministry of Health reported 370 Palestinian deaths and 2,200 wounded. The situation in the region remains tense and is being closely monitored by international stakeholders.
