U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan expressed the strength of the relationship between the two countries, saying, “The ROK-U.S. alliance is incredibly healthy,” despite martial law and impeachment proceedings in South Korea.
At a roundtable of 10 major domestic and foreign media outlets held at the White House on the 10th (local time), Advisor Sullivan said of President Yoon Seok-yeol’s declaration of martial law, “I think it is shocking and wrong,” but added, “(In Korea) it is a constitutional law.” “We are seeing the process unfold,” he said.
“We hope it will be done without violence and in accordance with South Korea’s constitution,” he said, adding, “We believe Korea will end this incident as a stronger democratic nation.”
However, Advisor Sullivan expressed concern about how North Korea would judge this situation in South Korea.
Advisor Sullivan said, “There is a risk that North Korea will exploit the political chaos in South Korea,” and expressed concern that “the trend toward denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula is heading in the wrong direction.”
It is interpreted that the remarks were aimed at North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.
He only mentioned, “Washington believes it is beneficial to help resolve this (North Korea) problem.”
