He hoped for a successful career as a footballer. But now Berkin Arslanogullari has cancer – and needs financial help.
Goalkeeper talent Berkin Arslanogullari from Bundesliga club Union Berlin has been diagnosed with bone cancer. Despite chemotherapy, the 19-year-old goalkeeper of the Köpenick U19 team had to have his left lower leg amputated to prevent the disease from spreading further.
Due to the high costs associated with the disease, the Arslanogullaris family is now in financial difficulties. A friend of the family therefore started a fundraising campaign on the “gofundme” platform. 55,800 euros have already been raised (as of September 16, 2024). But that is probably still not enough. The fundraising goal of the campaign entitled “New Start for Berkin” is two million euros.
A new apartment suitable for disabled people is a pressing problem for the family. They also need to have a prosthetic leg made. Support is also coming from Union Berlin itself and the club’s foundation. The club is also advertising the fundraising campaign through its channels.
Meanwhile, Arslanogullari himself is still fighting and is undergoing further chemotherapy. “I have already overcome many obstacles in my life. And now I will fight this disease with all means at my disposal. I thank everyone,” he said.
