Alaska Anchorage Gymnastics Team Achieves Season High at Air Force Tri-Meet

A strong performance on the balance beam propelled the Alaska Anchorage gymnastics team to a season-best total of 190.325 at the Air Force tri-meet on Friday, February 6, at Cadet West Gymnasium.
The Seawolves faced tough competition, finishing third behind Air Force (195.800) and Utah State (195.400). Despite the challenging field, UAA showcased notable individual achievements and team resilience.
Lessig Leads with All-Around Score
Junior Claudia Lessig delivered a standout performance, achieving a season-best all-around score of 38.250. Lessig also excelled on the balance beam, earning a 9.85 – a score that ties for No. 16 in UAA history – and securing a second-place finish on the event.
“Claudia continues to be rewarded for her hard work in the gym,” a team spokesperson stated. “And Alexandra and Jordan showed great skills on beam.”
Beam Dominance for UAA
The balance beam proved to be UAA’s strongest event, with three gymnasts placing among the top eight finishers. Freshman Alexandra Karkowski contributed a 9.8, while sophomore Jordan Grindol scored a 9.775, further solidifying the Seawolves’ strength on this apparatus.
Strong Vault and Uneven Bars Performances
Senior Madelyn Gomez led the team on vault with a 9.65, contributing to a team total of 47.800 on the event. Sophomore Verena Wong added a 9.625 to the vault score. On uneven bars, Jada Niles was the top performer for UAA, earning a 9.625, closely followed by Lessig with a 9.575.
Floor Exercise and Upcoming Competition
Senior Ariana DeSouza led the Seawolves on floor exercise with a 9.625, while Lessig contributed a 9.475.
