The United Arab Emirates is embarking on a massive infrastructure overhaul, committing over 170 billion dirhams (approximately $46 billion USD) to transportation and road projects by 2030. The ambitious plan, revealed during the annual meetings of the UAE government 2025 in Abu Dhabi, aims to significantly reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity between the country’s emirates.
A Comprehensive Strategy for Future Mobility
According to a senior official, the projects represent a “comprehensive strategy” focused on expanding federal roads, bolstering mass transportation options, and implementing both high-speed and light rail networks. These investments are designed to accommodate rapid population and economic growth while enhancing the quality of life for citizens and residents. The initiative aligns with the UAE Centennial 2071, a long-term vision for a sustainable and prosperous future.
world-Class Infrastructure and a National Priority
The UAE already boasts a highly advanced and sustainable infrastructure network, built to international specifications.Addressing traffic congestion, however, has been identified as a “pivotal issue and a national priority” for both federal and local authorities.Efforts are underway to enhance public transportation networks, making them more attractive and effective alternatives to private vehicles.
“Developing traffic policies and adapting them to the requirements of urban growth constitutes an essential foundation for ensuring the smoothness and efficiency of traffic,” a government spokesperson stated. The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure is targeting a 73% increase in the efficiency of federal roads within the next five years.
Major Road Expansions Planned
The advancement plan includes important expansions to key roadways. Capacity on Al Ittihad Street will increase by 60% with the addition of six lanes – three in each direction – bringing the total to 12 lanes. Emirates Road will see a 65% capacity increase and a projected 45% reduction in travel time through expansion to 10 lanes. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road will also be expanded to 10 lanes, increasing capacity by 45%.
Moreover, the construction of a Fourth Federal Road is under consideration. This 120-kilometer, 12-lane highway is projected to handle up to 360,000 trips per day, significantly boosting the efficiency of the federal road network and supporting economic growth. “.
Addressing the Root Causes of Congestion
One of the primary drivers of traffic congestion is the rapid growth in the number of vehicles – exceeding 8% annually, more than double the global average of 2%. this, coupled with a reliance on private vehicles, converging work and school hours, and overall population growth, contributes to the problem.
to combat these challenges, the Ministry is coordinating with local authorities to update traffic policies, incentivize public and smart transportation, strengthen existing road networks, and explore new road construction projects. A key focus is on promoting mass transit options and integrating them across the emirates.
Investing in a Sustainable Future
The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has already begun implementing projects to improve the efficiency of Emirates Road, with an estimated cost of 750 million dirhams and a two-year implementation timeline. This project exemplifies the nation’s commitment to a “more developed, efficient and sustainable federal road network.”
Integrated Rail Network to Alleviate Pressure
Recognizing the importance of a diversified transportation system, the UAE launched the National Railway Program in 2021, allocating 50 billion dirhams to the project. This initiative aims to build an integrated rail network that enhances connectivity, reduces carbon emissions, and improves traffic safety.
“Etihad Rail is moving confidently towards launching passenger transport services by 2026,” a senior official confirmed, adding that the network will meet the highest international standards and contribute to alleviating congestion.
The UAE’s significant investment in transportation infrastructure signals a commitment to building a future-ready nation, prioritizing efficient mobility, sustainable development, and an enhanced quality of life for all.
