Despite repeated calls from the UAE and the Arab League for their return, Iran has ignored the offer and is continuing construction.

The construction began during the reign of former Iranian President Ahmadinejad, in violation of international norms. The GCC countries have come together to protest the provocative move and the UAE has recalled its ambassador to Iran Saif Mohammed Abid al-Sabi.
