A UAE cargo ship carrying 30 people has sunk off the coast of Iran.

The ship sank 30 miles off the Iranian port of Assalu in the Persian Gulf.

The Iranian Meteorological Agency said that severe weather has been prevailing in the Persian Gulf since yesterday. Authorities say bad weather was the cause of the sinking.

Authorities said a helicopter had been dispatched to the scene and search and rescue operations were underway.
