Abu Dhabi: A rail project is coming up to connect the UAE and Oman. The two countries have signed a memorandum of understanding to set up a high-speed passenger train from Abu Dhabi to Sohar in 47 minutes.

The important agreement was signed on the occasion of the visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Oman. Freight and passenger traffic between the two countries will be strengthened through passenger and freight trains.

Trains traveling at a speed of 200 km per hour will cover a distance of 303 km in 47 minutes. With this, the distance between the two countries will be reduced to three and a half hours. A joint venture company will be established by UAE and Oman to implement the project. The cost of infrastructure development is 1100 crores.

Etihad Rail Chief Executive Shadi Malak said that the rail project will help strengthen the relationship between the two countries. The two countries have signed 16 agreements on energy, transport, freight, water transport, investment and industry. The proposed GCC rail will become more feasible as the UAE and Oman will be connected by train. GCC Rail will connect all 6 Gulf countries.
