(Reuters) – The U.S. auto workers union UAW said on Monday it has filed unfair labor practices charges against Honda (TYO:), Hyundai and Volkswagen (ETR:), citing aggressive anti-union campaigns to deter workers. workers to organize.

The UAW said last month it was beginning an unprecedented effort to publicly organize the entire non-union auto sector in the United States after winning record new contracts with Detroit’s three major automakers.

Last week, the union said more than 1,000 workers at the Volkswagen assembly plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, had signed union authorization cards, representing more than 30% of workers.

The UAW has filed complaints about the actions of Honda in Indiana, Hyundai in Alabama and Volkswagen in Tennessee.

A Honda worker claimed that management illegally ordered workers to remove union stickers from caps, the UAW said. Hyundai illegally surveyed employees about their support for the UAW and confiscated union materials, prohibiting their distribution in non-work areas, the union charged.

Honda and Hyundai did not immediately comment.

The UAW also said VW threatened and coerced employees by “preventing them from exercising their right to engage in protected activities, prohibiting employees from discussing unionization during work hours, and restricting the distribution of union materials.”

Volkswagen said on Monday it “respects the right of our workers to determine who should represent their interests in the workplace… We take allegations like this seriously and will investigate accordingly.”
