Ubisoft’s Internal Services Compromised in Security Breach

This week, video game company Ubisoft experienced a security breach when hackers attempted to steal 900GB of data, including user data from the popular game Rainbow Six Siege. The breach was reported by VX-Underground, a website that specializes in hacking and cybersecurity news.

Ubisoft reportedly discovered the breach 48 hours later and was able to revoke the hackers’ access before they could successfully extract the data. In a statement to BleepingComputer, Ubisoft said, “We are aware of an alleged data security incident and are currently investigating it. We have no further to share at this time.”

VX-Underground posted redacted screenshots shared by the attacker, which allegedly show access to Microsoft Teams chats, Ubisoft SharePoint server, Confluence, and MongoDB Atlas. The attacker did not disclose how they gained initial access, but they were able to review user access rights and thoroughly investigate Microsoft Teams, Confluence, and SharePoint.

Despite the hackers’ efforts, their attempt to obtain Rainbow Six Siege user data failed. It is not clear at this time if they were able to access any sensitive information before Ubisoft shut down the system.

The security breach serves as a reminder of the ongoing threat posed by cybercriminals and the importance of robust cybersecurity measures in protecting sensitive data. Ubisoft has not provided any further details about the breach or the extent of the potential data exposure.
