Hamburg.

And at the end Udo Lindenberg came and sang “What are wars for?” together with Pascal Kravetz: Under the motto “Together!” numerous artists collected money for children in and from the Ukraine on Wednesday evening in Hamburg’s St. Pauli Theater.

Among others, singer-songwriter Anna Depenbusch, cabaret artist Matthias Deutschmann, actors Hannelore Hoger and Peter Franke and singers Gustav Peter Wöhler and Stefan Gwildis performed at the benefit gala. The cabaret artist Emmanuel Peterfalvi, known as Alfons, led through the evening. He had swapped his orange training jacket for a blue and yellow “peace jacket”.

“Recently I couldn’t sleep at night. I saw the picture of a small child from Ukraine, I couldn’t bear it,” said Alfons at the beginning of the three-hour evening. “Nobody deserves a war – but children least of all!” All proceeds from the evening will benefit the Ukraine aid of the child protection organization Save The Children. “We do everything we can to help children and their families,” said spokeswoman Helene Mutschler. The organization also helps the four million refugees in Poland and Romania with shelter and play areas for traumatized children.

Many artists had selected their texts and songs according to the occasion: Peter Franke performed the “War Song” by Matthias Claudius, the musicians from Salut Salon a “Lullaby” from Georgia and a Yiddish song “that every child in Odessa knows”. Actor Gustav Peter Wöhler recalled the “March into the 3rd Reich” and singer Reinhold Beckmann remembered his mother’s four brothers, all of whom died in World War II. (dpa)
