Uffizi, after Easter work begins to reopen the Vasari Corridor

by time news

Starting after Easter, the works for the reopening to the public of the Vasari Corridor, the “aerial” walk that leads from the Uffizi to Palazzo Pitti, built in 1565, closed in 2016 for safety reasons. It should return to being usable next year: the duration of the works on the structure is estimated at about 11 months, followed by those for the refurbishment and opening to the public which should go on for about another three months.

The Uffizi Galleries themselves give the news of the next start of the works, having concluded the award phase, managed by Invitalia, of the restoration, adaptation and safety project, for a tender value of about 7 million euros, cost overall 10 million, already funded. The business association Fratelli Navarra-Dafne Restauri won the tender. “For the first time in history it will be democratically open to all”, the words, as reported by a note, by director Eike Schmidt according to whom “it would be significant, and now, pandemic permitting, it is becoming a concrete possibility, if we manage to inaugurate the Vasari Corridor precisely on 27 May 2022 », the day on which the anniversary of the mafia attack in via dei Georgofili falls, which in 1993 caused 5 victims and seriously damaged the initial part of the Corridor, as well as ruining numerous paintings in the Uffizi. The reopening, adds Schmidt, is “at the same time a clear sign of hope in the restart after the long period of closures due to the pandemic”. Satisfaction also by the superintendent of Archaeological Heritage, Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of Florence, Prato and Pistoia, Andrea Pessina “for the launch of such an important work for Florence that will lead to the creation of a large, unique museum circuit “.

Based on the project presented in February 2019, when the reopening was announced already for 2021, the Corridor will no longer host the famous collection of self-portraits – in addition to other paintings for a total of more than 700 works destined for other spaces of the Uffizi – but there will be space for 30 ancient sculptures and a collection of Greek and Roman inscriptions. There will also be two memorials: one in correspondence with via Georgofili, the other immediately after Ponte Vecchio to commemorate the Nazi devastation of 1944. The Corridor, it is explained, will be accessible in one direction only, that is, from the Uffizi to Pitti: planned at the moment that inside it can contain, for safety reasons, a maximum of 125 people at the same time.
