Uganda Ebola warning level has risen

by time news

People have been infected in the districts of Mubende, Bunyangabu, Kyegegwa, Kasanda and Kagadi

There is an Ebola outbreak in some regions in Uganda that are also frequented by tourists. RIVM therefore asks medical professionals to be alert to Uganda travelers about complaints that could be related to Ebola and to request diagnostics to exclude or confirm. Travelers returning from these areas are also advised to be alert to Ebola symptoms. However, the risk of patients with this disease remains small.

Level 2
There are different scaling up phases for Ebola. As a result, healthcare workers who may be involved with a possible patient in the Netherlands know better where they stand. Phase 2 has been in effect for Ebola since today. This means that there is an outbreak somewhere in the world, with a real chance of a patient in the Netherlands. The chance is real, but it remains small.

Outbreak Uganda
On September 20, the Ugandan Ministry of Health and the WHO (World Health Organization) reported that there was an Ebola outbreak in Uganda. Since the outbreak, doctors have diagnosed Ebola in 54 people, 19 of whom have died. In addition, there are 20 probable Ebola deaths among individuals who died before a sample was collected. More than 1000 contacts have been found in this group so far.

Districts
People became infected in Mubende, Bunyangabu, Kyegegwa, Kasanda and Kagadi districts. Especially in the Bunyangabu region, many tourists who visit Uganda come. Anyone traveling to these areas is strongly advised not to eat bushmeat, not to touch animals and to avoid contact with (possible) patients or deceased persons. In addition, keep an eye on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for current travel advice.

Complaints
Ebola is a viral hemorrhagic fever that makes people very sick. The disease often starts with fever, headache and muscle aches, but can progress to bleeding in the body. Outbreaks occurred in Africa, such as in Congo in 2018-2019 and in West Africa in 2014-2015. About half of the people infected with the virus died in these outbreaks.

Have you been to Uganda in the past 3 weeks and do you have complaints, such as fever, muscle pain or headache? Please contact your GP by telephone to discuss your complaints and your trip to Uganda. Your GP can consult with the GGD (Municipal Health Service).
