France won its first gold medal at the 2024 Paralympic Games with para-swimmer Ugo Didier, winning in the final of the 400m freestyle S9 category on Wednesday at the Paris La Défense Arena.

Frenchman Ugo Didier won the first French gold medal on Wednesday afternoon, in the 400m freestyle in the S9 category, at the Paris Paralympic Games. In an environment with great potential, the 22-year-old para-swimmer completed the distance in 4 minutes 12 minutes 55, finishing in front of the Italian Simone Barlaam and the Australian Brenden Hall.

Ugo Didier is one of the favorites for a medal among the lightest French para-swimming team, also supported by another 22-swimming swimmer, Alex Portal. Having become world champion in the 100m backstroke at just 17 years old, the Toulouse student has already participated in the Tokyo Paralympic Games where he won a silver and a bronze medal. He won his first title in Paris.

Ugo Didier will participate in many other events. He will start the 50m freestyle on Monday, the 100m backstroke on Tuesday and the 200m medley on Wednesday. France had another great chance to be on the podium during the evening with Alex Portal, who qualified for the 100m butterfly in the S13 category, reserved for visually impaired people.
