Physical activity is not only effective in promoting physical, emotional, and social health, but also reduces medical costs. Accordingly, Uijeongbu City (Mayor Kim Dong-geun) is working hard on various projects to encourage citizens to adopt walking as a lifestyle. We introduce the results of the ‘Walking King Individual Exhibition’, which was successfully completed for the first time this year, and the various walking projects that the city is promoting.

□ Every year, the number of steps increases, and health also improves!… 2024 Walking King Individual Competition Completed

The ‘2024 Walking King Individual Exhibition’ has been held annually since 2020 for all citizens as part of Uijeongbu City’s non-face-to-face healthy lifestyle practice project.

This is a method of checking the number of steps and rankings for each individual in real time using a mobile application (WalkOn). In order to continuously motivate, it is conducted as a challenge where promotional materials are provided through a lottery among participants who walk more than 200,000 steps every month.

In addition, health information, such as the correct walking method, is provided within the application community at least twice a month to improve citizens’ health knowledge.

Thanks to these efforts, various indicators, including the number of participants and walking practice rate, are showing positive trends every year.

The number of participants is increasing every year, and this year, 3,834 people participated, which is a 44% increase from last year (2,141 people). The average number of daily steps also increased from 8,775 to 9,317 steps last year, and the walking practice rate (the percentage of people who walked for more than 30 minutes on more than 5 days a week) also increased from 64.18% to 65.36%, showing that the project is showing significant results as it continues.

Body mass index (BMI), which indicates obesity, decreased by 0.47 from 24.13 before participation to 23.66 after participation, and obesity rate, which is the percentage of people with a body mass index of 25 or higher, decreased by 3.49% from 34.89% before participation to 31.40% after participation.

□ Customized healthy lifestyle practice… Various walking projects

▶’Silver Walk’ to promote physical activity for citizens aged 65 and over

‘Silver Walk’ was designed for citizens over 65 years old in the city to keep up with the aging society. It was carried out from May to July of this year to provide a walking environment to prevent various adult diseases.

As of the end of July, the number of participants has increased to around 400, up from 333 last year. Through the monthly challenge, health promotional materials such as body lotion and nutritional supplements were provided, receiving a great response.

Participants shared positive comments such as, “The hospital professor said that my health has improved a lot since I started participating in the walking exercise,” and “I feel like my body and mind have become healthier since I developed the habit of walking every day.”

▶’Healthy Weight Manager’ for obesity prevention and management and healthy exercise habits

‘Healthy Weight Manager’ is a project that provides non-face-to-face home training education through Zoom Live lectures to citizens with a body mass index of 25 or higher, and is conducted in parallel with walking exercise.

We provide weight management and education to individuals with obesity, and we make those with risk factors for obesity aware of the dangers of obesity and the importance of prevention, thereby encouraging them to practice healthy lifestyles.

We measure the amount of body fat reduction through free body composition tests (InBody) before and after the event, and provide promotional materials to excellent participants. This year, it is divided into three periods from June to August, and the third period is currently underway in August.

▶’Want to Walk Together?’ where disabled and non-disabled people living in the area walk together

‘Want to Walk Together?’ is a community-centered rehabilitation project where registered disabled people in the area and their family members and acquaintances walk together.

In the first half of this year, from May 1st to 31st, we operated a walking donation participation (challenge) format using the mobile app (WalkOn).

It is operated in a way that if all participants reach the cumulative step goal for one month, health promotion items will be provided. As an intermediate mission, the ‘Let’s walk together’ program, where the subjects gather and walk together from the public health center to Dongmak Bridge Square, was also carried out and received a good response. The second half of the year will be held from August 1 to 31.

▶’One Mind Dementia Overcoming Walking Event’ to Create a Dementia-Friendly Environment

The ‘One Mind Dementia Overcoming Walk’ event was held from May to July to raise awareness of the importance of dementia management and to build social consensus for overcoming dementia.

We are providing health promotion materials to the top participants in each region based on the number of steps, and are trying to improve negative perceptions about dementia.

Mayor Kim Dong-geun said, “I hope that all citizens can participate in walking programs that are suitable for them and practice a customized healthy lifestyle,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to provide an environment where citizens can maintain and practice health in their daily lives.”
