The British Medical Association, the main professional association for doctors and medical students in the United Kingdom, has joined the “Save Lives” call. This document, of more than 20 British drug-related groups, asks the Government to take urgent measures to reduce the damage caused by driving under the influence of alcohol, the deaths and injuries of the groups these are classified as avoided.
Among the specific measures of saving lives from the Executive, a reduction is recommended “as soon as possible” of the legally allowed amount of blood alcohol, which is currently at 0.08%. In the case of novice and professional drivers, it is suggested that this limit does not exceed 20 mg / 100 ml (0.02%) and for other drivers, 50 mg / 100 ml (0.05%) is required.
It also suggested that alcoholic beverages should be sold with a mandatory warning label, similar to that used for tobacco, that includes clear information on the risk of alcohol to health, in addition to the content of a particular drink’s alcohol content (and calories), as well as a reminder that there is no safe limit for alcohol intake before driving.
In addition, medical institutions ask the Administration to guarantee that people who exceed these legal limits found in alcohol and drug controls can be referred to specific alcohol treatment services.
