UK Government Exploring Future Options for Jodrell Bank

The UK government is exploring options to secure the long-term future of Jodrell Bank following a science-based decision to shift funding toward the Square Kilometre Array, while local councils and parliamentarians press for financial solutions to protect the historic observatory and its regional radio telescope network.

Government officials maintain that Jodrell Bank has a secure future as an active scientific asset, even as funding shifts away from the existing e-Merlin telescope system. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds addressed the House of Commons to confirm that ministers are actively evaluating the site’s long-term options.

Funding Transition to the Square Kilometre Array

The current uncertainty stems from a strategic decision regarding national research budgets. UK Research and Innovation announced in July that Jodrell Bank will not be prioritized for further funding after its current agreement ends in March 2028. Business Secretary Reynolds explained to parliamentarians that the shift represents a science-based decision to prioritize resources toward the Square Kilometre Array.

The Prime Minister and I have been clear that Jodrell Bank has a secure future.

Mr Reynolds

Headquartered at Jodrell Bank, the Square Kilometre Array is an intergovernmental undertaking, with its actual telescope arrays mainly being built in South Africa and Australia. Reynolds emphasized that managing the nation’s research and development budget requires prioritizing funding based strictly on scientific merit while still recognizing Jodrell Bank’s enduring value as a national asset.

Impact on the e-Merlin Network and Regional Radio Dishes

Seven large radio telescopes spanning England to comprise e-MERLIN—the nation’s radio astronomy facility managed from Jodrell Bank—face risks from the intended withdrawal of £2.8 million in annual funding by UK Research and Innovation. Astronomers and university officials warn that scientific observations across the entire 217-kilometer network will cease on April 1, 2028, unless alternative financial support is established before the current funding agreement expires on March 31, 2028.

Local radio dishes dependent on the network face immediate operational risks. The Darnhall radio telescope in Winsford and the landmark dish located in Knockin, Shropshire—which is operated remotely by scientists at Jodrell Bank—both rely on the e-Merlin infrastructure. Parliamentarians and local leaders have raised concerns that closing the network will jeopardize specialized technical jobs and sovereign scientific capabilities.

Parliamentary Debate and Local Government Action

Green MP Hannah Spencer brought the issue to the floor of the House of Commons, warning that shutting down the telescope setup puts jobs at risk and questioning how the government plans to maintain Jodrell Bank as an active sovereign scientific facility. Spencer noted that many citizens visited the facility on school trips during their youth and pointed to prior assurances from leadership regarding a funding solution.

Many of us went there on school trips as kids, and the Prime Minister assured us that his Government will find a funding solution.

In Cheshire West and Chester, councillors prepared to debate a motion put forward by Adrian Waddelove urging the council leader to write to the secretary of state and local members of parliament. The motion highlights that Jodrell Bank is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that remains a major active scientific facility. The site attracts approximately 125,000 paying visitors annually, including 25,000 school pupils, and supports an estimated annual gross economic impact of £4.7 million.

Business Secretary Reynolds confirmed that discussions are moving forward locally. He noted that he met with representatives from the University of Manchester, which runs the project, and stated that local members of parliament have been actively engaged in seeking a viable path forward.
