Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour Party has won a majority in the House of Commons following the UK’s snap general election, ending 14 years of Conservative rule in the country.

As reported by Day.Az with reference to Russian media, the vote count has not yet been completed in all constituencies, but the Laborites have already officially won in 381 of them, which provides them with a comfortable majority in the 650-seat chamber.

Keir Starmer and shadow finance minister Rachel Reeves, who is tipped to take the second most important post in the future government, won confidently in their constituencies.

Incumbent Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also managed to win re-election in his Richmond and Northallerton constituency. However, he acknowledged that the Conservatives had lost and said that he congratulated Starmer on his victory.

“The British people have delivered a sobering verdict today and I take responsibility for the defeat,” Sunak said.

British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps also acknowledged that the ruling Conservative Party in Great Britain suffered a defeat in the parliamentary elections held on July 4. The defense minister’s speech was broadcast by Sky News.

“It is clear that the UK will have a new government in the morning. And I am worried that if it does not quickly commit to spending 2.5% of GDP on defence, our armed forces could suffer just like our friends in Ukraine,” said the politician, who minutes earlier lost his seat in the elections. Shapps has been sitting in the House of Commons since 2005.

Labour supports the idea of increasing defence spending to 2.5% of GDP from the current 2.2%. However, they do not indicate a precise date when they intend to do this. The Conservatives have previously announced that they plan to increase spending to this level by 2030.

On Friday morning, the leader of the winning party is due to be received by King Charles III. At the audience, Starmer will be tasked with forming a new government. After that, he will go to Downing Street and address the nation as the new prime minister.
