British Prime Minister Andy Burnham confirmed on Wednesday that authorities believe Iran played a part in an early Sunday security incident near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. Five British men were arrested on suspicion of terrorism and explosives offenses before being released on strict bail conditions.
Security Breach at RAF Fairford Unfolds
The security incident unfolded in the early hours of Sunday morning when three vehicles moved toward RAF Fairford, a military air base located west of London in Gloucestershire. Two separate emergency calls alerted local authorities to suspicious activity. One call came from an individual allegedly involved calling authorities in the early hours of Sunday morning, followed by a later call from a farmer who called emergency services to report three vehicles and men in balaclavas acting suspiciously.
Counter Terrorism Policing are leading the investigation into any potential motivation behind the incident. After examination of the vehicles, authorities found no improvised explosive devices, but police said they recovered a quantity of petrol.
The five men, all British nationals from London, were arrested after the incident.
Intelligence Leads and International Reactions
Speaking to the BBC and Sky News, Prime Minister Burnham revealed that intelligence gathered throughout the week pointed directly to Tehran. Following the event that transpired during the early hours of Sunday, Burnham mentioned that he had convened an urgent security gathering this week. Two senior intelligence officials familiar with the situation informed NBC News that Burnham’s remarks relied on intelligence compiled throughout the ongoing inquiry into the event. Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing, stated on Monday that every possible angle
was being investigated, including that this may be activity committed by proxies, or individuals either knowingly or unknowingly, working on behalf of a foreign state.

“I will tell you, I would have said, ‘don’t let them have bail’. I’m surprised that they released them. I wouldn’t have done that.”
In response to international scrutiny regarding the bail decisions, Burnham defended the legal process, insisting that the men were subject to the strictest possible bail conditions.
The Prime Minister also noted that the government has been talking to our counterparts in the United States all week to explain what is happening here, how things are being done
and that he has complete confidence in the way British security services are handling this.
While the British Parliament is in recess, Burnham said he wouldn't hesitate
to recall lawmakers should that be necessary.
Tehran Rejects British Accusations
The Iranian government strongly rejected the accusations linking Tehran to the arrests. The embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in London issued a statement on X stating it categorically rejects and strongly condemns the recent unfounded and malicious speculations published by some British individuals and media outlets attempting to link Iran to arrest of five suspects in the vicinity of RAF Fairford base.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also dismissed the prime minister’s assertions in a public social media post on Wednesday.

“I can confirm Iran’s belief that releasing supposed terrorists working for foreign states really says it all. You’re barking up the wrong tree.”
This diplomatic strain comes after several months of elevated local friction surrounding RAF Fairford, situated west of London, which American forces have utilized for recent military campaigns targeting Iran. Earlier this year, the U.S. Air Force was authorized to use RAF Fairford to carry out “defensivestrikes on Iran. In July, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned the U.K. that any British military base used by the U.S. to launch attacks would become a
legitimate target.”
