London: The new Labour government of Britain has decided to release a large number of prisoners. This decision has been taken under the leadership of Justice Minister Shabana Mahmood to reduce the problems caused by increasing overcrowding in prisons. Under this scheme, those prisoners will be released who have served 40 percent of their sentence. Prisoners will be released after completing 40 percent of their sentence instead of the current 50 percent in England and Wales. However, some conditions will also be imposed in this. Criminals serving sentences for serious violent crimes, sexual crimes and crimes related to domestic abuse have been excluded from the scheme.
Justice Minister Shabana Mahmood announced this on Friday and said that the UK government plans to temporarily release prisoners before their sentence to deal with overcrowding in jails. This scheme of the government will come into effect from September. She has said that prisoners sentenced for four years or more, prisoners convicted of serious violent crimes and sexual crimes will be excluded from this, and there will also be early release of criminals imprisoned for crimes related to domestic abuse.
It is necessary to immediately improve the system of prisons: Shabana
Shabana Mahmood has said that immediate steps are needed to reduce overcrowding in prisons. If this is not done, the prison system can completely collapse. In such a situation, thousands of prisoners will be released in early September. Shabana also accused Rishi Sunak and the previous Conservative government of not paying attention to this crisis while in power. Minister Shabana said that if space is not made in the prisons, the courts will also start collapsing and we will have to face the collapse of the justice system. Necessary steps are being taken to prevent this from happening.
Shabana Mahmood said the first batch of prisoners to be released in September will number in the thousands. This will be followed by more releases over the next 18 months and Parliament will be updated about it every three months. The Ministry of Justice (MOJ) believes that 4,000 additional male prisoners and about 1,000 female prisoners will be released over the next 18 months.
