UK Warmth Forecast to Fade as Rain and Cooler Air Return This Week

Temperatures will climb toward the mid-20s Celsius across southern England before a weather front brings rain and cooler air this week.

Weekend Nor’easter and Weather Fronts Bring Rain to the UK and Jersey Shore

A weather front moving south across the UK separates cooler air in the north from warmer conditions in the south, while a coastal storm takes a track along the Jersey shore. Saturday began with wet and windy weather across Scotland and northwest England, accompanied by heavy rain spreading into north Wales and parts of southwest Scotland.

Travelers faced difficult conditions early in the day in the wettest zones. Central parts of England and Wales remained cloudy and wet with gusty winds, while southern England stayed largely dry during the daytime with sunshine in the far southeast. The Met Office reported on weekend weather conditions that temperatures near London reached the mid-20s Celsius, while most other areas saw highs in the upper teens or low 20s.

Sunday Clearing and Brighter Skies Ahead

A ridge of high pressure brought an improving picture for much of the UK on Sunday as the lingering weather front cleared the southern counties and Channel Islands. Conditions proved reasonably good for the Great North Run in Newcastle, where temperatures generally reached the upper teens or low 20s Celsius.

Southern areas saw sunshine push temperatures to 23 or 24 degrees Celsius, though the air felt cooler, fresher and less humid than on Saturday. Winds turned lighter across most regions despite a few lingering light showers.

Diminishing Winds and Gradual Drying in the Northeast

Along the mid-Atlantic coast, the weekend nor’easter brought gray skies, steadier rain, and non-damaging gusty winds. The weakening coastal low drifted up the Jersey shore overnight, sending light to moderate rain onshore that dropped an additional quarter-inch to a half-inch of precipitation in affected areas.

Winds began to diminish steadily, dropping to 10 to 15 miles per hour with fewer gusts. Monday brings mostly cloudy skies with a few scattered morning showers, a drier afternoon, and cool late-September highs in the upper 60s, according to local weather forecasts.

Midweek Warmth Before Late-Week Frontal Passage

Partly sunny and increasingly warm conditions return as September wraps up. Tuesday brings sunshine and average high temperatures in the low 70s, followed by mid-70s on Wednesday with light winds and blue skies.

October will begin with some of the warmest weather of the forecast, with partly sunny skies pushing highs to around 80 degrees on Thursday and Friday. A cold front is expected to pass through on Friday with little fanfare, bringing a wind shift, a small 20 percent chance of a shower, and cooler air sliding in behind it for the weekend.

Unsettled Conditions Returning Early Next Week

Further weather fronts and bands of rain are expected to approach the UK during the early part of next week, maintaining a changeable weather pattern across the country. Across the Atlantic, next Saturday looks mainly dry with a mix of clouds and sun and highs in the upper 60s to around 70 degrees.

However, wet weather looks increasingly likely next Sunday for the third straight week. While not a nor’easter this time, the approaching Sunday system marks the next best chance for rain after the current coastal storm completely clears the region.
