The Russian missile attack on Uman, which killed 23 civilians, including four children, is terror carried out by absolute evil, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday evening. The tragedy in this city in the central part of the country took place in the early morning.
“The demolition of the ruins in Uman, where the Russian missile hit, lasted all day. We currently know of 23 dead, including four children. I express my condolences to the family and relatives…” said the head of state in his evening speech, which he published on Telegram.
Zelensky said that all the victims are receiving the necessary help. He also thanked the rescuers for their participation in the search operation.
“The rocket hit Uman, an absolutely peaceful city, known worldwide for hosting tens of thousands of Hasidic pilgrims every year… Only absolute evil can lead such terror against Ukraine,” he stressed.
Uman is an important pilgrimage destination for Hasidim from all over the world, as the grave of Rabbi Nachman of Braclaw, one of the most important figures of Hasidism, is located here.
The president said that a young mother and her almost three-year-old daughter were killed in the missile attack on the city of Dnieper. “Mother and daughter. Olga, who was born in 92 and Weronika in 20 (resp. 1992 and 2020-PAP). This child is not even three years old! Eternal memory! Condolences to the entire family, expressions of sympathy to the loved ones,” he said.
Zelensky confirmed that Russia used 23 missiles in Friday’s attack on his country, 21 of which were destroyed by anti-aircraft defenses.
“If it wasn’t for that, the terrorist state could have claimed many more victims, more lives. This is another proof that only weapons can stop terror and save human lives,” he said, pointing to the need to supply Ukraine with weapons.
“Anti-aircraft defense measures, modern aviation, without which there is no effective anti-aircraft defense. Artillery, military equipment. Everything that is necessary to ensure the security of our cities and villages, both in the rear and on the front line,” he said.
This is necessary to “give security also to our people who, unfortunately, are currently in the occupied territories. For now. We cannot leave anyone under the power of Russian evil,” Zelensky said.
