Ukraine: at least six dead after Russian strikes, many cities without water and electricity

by time news

New strikes throughout Ukraine. The country was again hit by several bombardments on Wednesday afternoon, after the whole of Ukraine was placed under air alert at midday. According to the head of the national police, Igor Klymenko, the Russian bombardments left at least six people dead and 36 injured.

In kyiv, “three people were killed. Among them is a 17-year-old girl,” said the mayor of the capital, Vitaly Klitschko, who said that “eleven residents were injured” in these strikes. According to him, an “infrastructure site” was hit and the water supply was “suspended throughout Kyiv”. The regional governor, Oleksiï Kouleba, announced to him that “the whole region is without light”.

Power cuts across the country

Explosions were also reported in the regions of Vinnitsa, Lviv, Poltava, Kharkiv and Kremenchug, reports BBC Russian. Other missiles reached Ukrainian soil without causing casualties, but hitting key energy infrastructures.

Two missile strikes hit a power station in the western Lviv region, while an energy facility was hit in Kirovohrad Oblast. Power plants in the Mykolaiv region have been urgently shut down, Ukrainian media report.

The entire Ukrainian electricity network was weakened by the bombardments, which urgently led the management organization to organize emergency cuts throughout the territory. Private Ukrainian operator DTEK confirmed on Telegram that “emergency power cuts” had been implemented in Kyiv to try to “stabilize the situation as soon as possible”.

Andrii Sadovy, the mayor of Lviv, had mentioned a general power cut in the city following strikes, before the measures of the electricity operator. “There may also be water cuts,” he announced on Telegram.

Moldova ‘plunged into darkness’

In Moldova, a country bordering southwestern Ukraine, several power cuts are also recorded, as had already happened earlier this month. “More than 50% of the country” is concerned, according to Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Spinu, who specifies that the authorities are working to restore power.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu reacted strongly on Facebook: “We cannot trust a regime that plunges us into darkness and cold, that deliberately kills people in order to make others poor and obedient. No matter how difficult it is now, our only path, the future path of the Republic of Moldova, must remain to the free world.

These new Russian bombings in Ukraine came just minutes after the European Parliament voted on a resolution declaring Russia a “State promoter of terrorism”.
