Ukraine has launched a large-scale special operation “Polesie” on the border with the Republic of Belarus. As reported on Wednesday, November 24, by the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, units of the State Border Service, the National Guard, the police and the armed forces are participating in it. The purpose of the operation is “to prevent the migration crisis and counter illegal activities.”

According to the first deputy chairman of the State Border Service Volodymyr Nikiforenko, today on the Ukrainian-Belarusian border there is still a threat of the spread of the migration crisis and the likelihood of redirecting migrant flows to Ukraine, and therefore law enforcement agencies are jointly taking measures to build up the border protection system in this area.

Control of the state border regime will be carried out by enlarged border detachments with a simultaneous build-up of forces and means in areas where attempts to break through by groups of migrants are possible. In border protection, aviation, unmanned aerial systems, as well as technical means of observation will be actively used for patrolling and monitoring, the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine said in a statement.

Potential invasion direction

Earlier, on November 22, Ukrainian servicemen completed exercises at a training ground in the Zhitomir region, which borders on Belarus. As noted in the Ministry of Defense of the country, during the maneuvers, among other things, the actions of fighter and military transport aviation of the air force and army aviation of the ground forces were worked out. In Kiev, Reuters points out, they fear that Russia may use Belarus as one of the staging areas for a future invasion of Ukraine.

Reports of the concentration of Russian troops near Ukraine

From the end of October, Western media began to report about Russia’s military build-up along the Ukrainian borders. The last time a similar thing happened in the spring of 2021 and also caused serious concern in the world. But if the events in the spring were regarded as a show of force, then the current situation may be preparation for the actual invasion of Donbass in eastern Ukraine, the US intelligence services believe.

On November 21, in an exclusive interview with the Military Times, the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Kirill Budanov, said that Russia had concentrated more than 92 thousand troops near the borders of Ukraine, and was preparing for an attack, which could take place in late January – early February 2022.

Moscow denies all accusations of preparing an attack on Ukraine and, conversely, points to the increased activity of NATO along the Russian borders.
