Ukraine, which has been advancing into the Russian mainland for ten days, announced on the 15th (local time) that it has established a military command on the Russian mainland. This is interpreted as showing its will to continue a long fight in response to Russia’s announcement that it will send troops to reclaim the mainland. Ukraine claims that it has advanced 35km into Russia, making it the largest infiltration since the war, while Russia counters that it is reclaiming some areas occupied by Ukraine.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported today that Ukraine has established a military command in the Kursk region in southwestern Russia, from which surprise attacks on Russian territory are continuing. Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Oleksandr Sirsky, said the military command “will maintain law and order and meet the immediate needs of the local population.”

A video posted on social media that day also shows Commander-in-Chief Sirsky saying at a meeting chaired by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that “the military command has been created on territory controlled by Ukraine.”

The move appears to follow earlier comments from Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov saying Russia would send reinforcements to protect the region’s population, as the Russian military seeks to retake parts of mainland Russia occupied by Ukraine.

With the establishment of the military command, the scope of the mainland advance seems to be expanding. Commander-in-Chief Sirsky stated that “Ukrainian troops are 35 km inside the Kursk region and control 1,150 km2 of territory, including 82 settlements.” If this claim is true, it would be the deepest infiltration into Russia since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Ukraine also claimed to have occupied the Sudzha region of the Kursk region.

Meanwhile, the Russian side announced that it had retaken control of the village of Krupets in the Kursk region, which had been temporarily occupied by the Ukrainian army. Afti Alaudinov, the commander of the Chechen Republic’s Akhmat special forces that were deployed to the Kursk region to drive out the Ukrainian army, claimed that “we have recaptured the village of Martynovka, which is about 18 kilometers from the border.” The Russian Ministry of Defense also announced in a statement that it had retaken control of the village of Krupets in the Kursk region, which had been occupied by Ukraine. Sputnik news agency reported, citing a security service official, that the Russian marines eliminated Ukrainian troops during the Battle of Kursk, and that they appeared to have used small arms from NATO member countries. The claim is that Ukraine had prior communication with Western countries, including NATO, when it launched this attack on Kursk.

Meanwhile, a British source confirmed to the BBC that the tanks donated by Britain to Ukraine were used during the attack on the Russian mainland. Britain is one of the countries that has provided Ukraine with modern Western tanks. Last year, it delivered 14 Challenger 2 tanks. In addition to Britain, military equipment donated by the US and Germany is also being used in the attack on Ukraine.

The West is also on edge as the Ukrainian military, aided by Western weapons, is making progress on Russian soil. Russia has already accused the West of being behind attacks on its territory, and the fact that Western weapons are involved could fuel threats against the West, including nuclear strikes.
