Ukraine fears an influx of migrants from Belarus

The National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine fears “information provocations” against the country to redirect migrants from Belarus to it. The day before, Ukrainian border guards prevented an attempt by 15 foreigners to illegally enter the country from Belarus.

The Center for Countering Disinformation (CPD) under the NSDC reported that rumors are spreading among refugees on the Polish-Belarusian border about Germany’s alleged readiness to accept them. Poland denies this information and believes that it is aimed at inciting migrants to storm the Polish border.

“The CPD experts predict that a similar provocation tactic can be used in the direction of the Ukrainian-Belarusian border. In particular, information provocation is not ruled out that some of the neighboring countries of Ukraine are allegedly ready to accept refugees who only need to cross the territory of Ukraine, ”the NSDC press release says.

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported that it did not allow 15 immigrants from the Middle East who came from Belarus to enter the country. The incident took place yesterday, November 18th. Foreigners, including four teenagers, arrived from Minsk by bus, ostensibly as tourists. During the inspection, it turned out that most of them had passports “issued practically in the same period, in September-October of this year.”

“During an additional check, the border guards found out that foreigners … a few weeks ago flew to the capital of Belarus and immediately went to the Grodno region … The servicemen of the State Border Service decided not to pass and return the travelers to Belarus, because these persons had no reason to enter the territory of our state, ”the website of the border service says.

Against the background of the migration crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border, which escalated in November, Ukraine transferred its military and aviation to the border with Belarus. The NSDC said that they were preparing for different scenarios of the development of the situation. This week, the Verkhovna Rada allowed border guards to use weapons. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky promised Belarusians to keep the possibility of entering Ukraine.
