Ukraine is officially a candidate for entry into the EU

by time news

Whether it is the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, or the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, the comment is the same: it is “a historic moment”.

On Thursday June 23, after a long wait that lasted all afternoon, the leaders of the 27 Member States of the European Union decided to grant candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova. A decision that was expected, but which is no less significant, especially because it arrived in record time.

“Negotiations for membership will take years”

“Getting from membership application to official candidate status usually takes years, indeed explains The Guardian. But the EU, encouraged by the outrage over the brutality of the Russian attack, decided to show solidarity with Ukraine.”

An accession process which has therefore accelerated, but this one is far from over, warns the British media, which concludes:

“EU countries know very well that Ukraine’s accession negotiations will take many years.”
