Russia has described the planned delivery of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine as useless for the course of the war.

The West’s plans and the training of Ukrainian pilots on the F-16 are not helping to achieve the desired results against Russia, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Monday, according to the Moscow news agency Interfax.

«All these efforts are completely useless. Our capabilities are such that all objectives of the military special operation will be achieved with certainty.” Russia officially calls the war that began around 15 months ago a military special operation.

Ryabkov stressed that attempts by the “collective West” led by the United States to launch attacks on Russia’s security were unsuccessful. It is clear to Russia that all types of arms discussed in any way will sooner or later also end up in Ukraine.

Ryabkov also said that Russia would not allow the threat of US-armed strikes against the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea to be carried out. Kiev had repeatedly declared that it would liberate Crimea from Russian occupation. The nuclear power Russia, on the other hand, threatened to prevent this with all the means at its disposal.

Ukraine had received numerous commitments for F-16 aircraft for its so-called fighter jet alliance. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made it clear during his visit to Japan at the G7 summit of the leading democracies that these fighter jets are a turning point in the defense of Ukraine and on the way to a victory against Russia.

US President Biden had previously given in to Kiev’s urging and in principle cleared the way for the delivery of American fighter jets to Ukraine. The US also supports the training of Ukrainian fighter pilots. Concrete figures for the F-16 deliveries are not yet available. (sda/dpa)
