The change in Zelensky’s stance clearly shows that he is facing difficulties in the fight. Also, future support from his closest ally may stop, which will be a double blow for him. The arrival of American weapons in Ukraine in May has reduced the advance of Russian troops in eastern Ukraine significantly, but it has still not stopped completely. Russia is still occupying areas of Ukraine. However, its pace is slow. At the same time, questions are being raised about the willingness of the United States and Germany, two of Ukraine’s closest allies, to continue their support.
Why did Zelensky change his tone?
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Zelensky said Ukraine was not getting enough Western aid to win the war. Zelensky said, “Not everything depends on us. We know what the proper end of the war will be, but it does not depend only on us. It depends not only on our people and our will, but on finance, on weapons, on political support, in the European Union, in NATO and on the unity of the world.” Former US Ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst said that the events happening in the US these days are the reason for the change in Zelensky’s tone. Former President Donald Trump on Monday declared JD Vance, a staunch opponent of sending support to Ukraine, as his vice presidential candidate.
Conversation between Zelensky and Trump
According to CNN report, Herbst said that it is possible that Zelensky is trying to reach out to a possible future Trump administration by emphasizing the agreement. Zelensky said, ‘This peace agreement must be fair, which does not allow the Russian occupiers to torture, suppress and kill the people of Ukraine.’ Zelensky and Trump spoke on the phone on Friday. Former President Trump said that he would bring peace to the world and end the war that has killed so many people. Putin has repeatedly repeated in recent months that he is willing to negotiate with Ukraine. However, he has been putting such conditions that Ukraine or its Western allies will never agree to.
