The Air Defense Forces of Ukraine announced for the first time that it shot down the Russian hypersonic Kinjal (Dagger) missile.

The commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, General Mykola Oleschuk, said this on Saturday, May 6.

“We congratulate the people of Ukraine on the historic event! Yes, we have hit the “Kinjal” like no other! .. This happened on May 4 during a night attack in the sky of Kiev region.”

The Ukrainian general said that the X-47 missile was launched from the Russian territory by the MiG-31K aircraft, and it was shot down by the Patriot air defense system, which was recently delivered to Ukraine.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 and the war is still going on.

But an Air Force spokesman Yuri İqnat denied reports in the media that “Kinjal” may have been shot a day earlier. Oleschuk wrote that information that could be used by the enemy should not be published ahead of time:

“We will definitely tell you what, where, with what and when we hit! When the time comes,” – Yuri Ignat wrote.

“Defence Express” The publication previously reported on the discovery of missile fragments similar to “Kinjal” and suggested that the explosion that occurred in the sky of Kiev on the night of May 4 was related to the destruction of this missile.

The Russian command has not yet commented on the news about the launch of the missile.

The fact that “Kinjal” was shot was not recorded before. We are talking about a hypersonic missile system launched from aircraft. This is an aeroballistic missile, the air defense systems that existed in Ukraine until recently were practically powerless against this type of missile. According to military experts, the “Patriot” system is capable of hitting ballistic missiles.
