Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksie Reznikov told CNN that if the Russians invaded his country “it would be a bloody massacre”, claiming that enemy troops would “come back in the closet”.

As is well known, Resnikov’s remarks come in the wake of Ukraine’s and the United States’ fear of a Russian invasion, against the background of the thousands of Russian soldiers standing on the common border.

Biden will threaten sanctions in a meeting today with Putin

Reznikov told the network that Russia now has 95,000 troops within attack distance of Ukraine. He added that the Russian army would be able to quickly recruit more than 175,000 more soldiers. “We have 250,000 regular soldiers, and another 200,000 in reserve, that’s not enough to defeat us,” the defense minister said.

Today, Putin and Biden will meet and discuss tensions, with Biden expected to threaten harsh sanctions, with the aim of dissuading his Russian counterpart from a possible attack. According to US sources, the sanctions may focus on hurting the ability of Moscow’s major banks to convert the Russian ruble to the US dollar and other currencies.

The Kremlin has been denying for some time that it intends to invade Ukraine, claiming that the deployment of troops is purely defensive. Russia, on the other hand, claims that Ukraine is showing aggression towards it, and demands assurances that Kiev will not use military force to take back territory in Donetsk and Honsk, which has been taken over by Russian separatists.

Ahead of the first conversation between the two for the first time since July, Biden is consulting with European leaders with the aim of bringing about a uniform stand in defense of Ukraine.
