Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy received his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Lviv, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres is also there. The three politicians want to explore the possibility of entering into negotiations and discuss the situation at the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia.

Dhe Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan continues to advocate a diplomatic solution to the war in Ukraine. “I continue to believe that the war will eventually end at the negotiating table. In fact, Mr. Zelenskyj and Mr. Guterres also see it that way,” Erdogan said, according to the Turkish presidential palace on Thursday in Lviv in western Ukraine. Erdogan, UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj met there for talks. According to Erdogan, the results of the talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin will be evaluated.

After the first meeting, Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram that the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia, which was occupied by Russian troops, should be demilitarized. According to Zelensky, the plant must be completely freed from the “aggressors”. “This intended terror on the part of the aggressor can have catastrophic global consequences.” The United Nations must ensure the security of this strategic object. On Wednesday evening, Selenskyj had again called for Russian soldiers to be withdrawn from Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.

Guterres also called for security measures after his meeting with Zelenskyy. “The area must be demilitarized,” said the UN chief. The facility may not be used for military operations. “Instead, an agreement is urgently needed to restore Zaporizhia as a purely civilian infrastructure and to ensure the security of the area.” Any possible damage to the nuclear power plant is “suicide”.

Guterres also announced a reconnaissance mission following the attack on a camp housing Ukrainian POWs in late July. Brazilian General Carlos dos Santos Cruz is said to be in charge of the operation. “We will now continue to work to obtain the necessary assurances to ensure safe access to the site and all other relevant locations,” Guterres said.

After the death of around 50 Ukrainian prisoners of war in the Olenivka prison near Donetsk at the end of July, Ukraine had requested access by independent international experts in order to clarify the case. Russia and Ukraine accuse each other of being responsible for the deaths of the prisoners.

Turkey pledges support for Kyiv to rebuild infrastructure

A tripartite summit of Zelenskyj with Guterres and Erdogan was also held. The UN chief and the two presidents met in Lviv, Anadolu reported. There will be a press conference after the meeting, but according to the UN, this should not be broadcast live.

For the United Nations and Turkey, the meeting was also about trying to explore a negotiated solution almost six months after the Russian attack on Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Erdogan has positioned himself as a mediator between Russia, with which Turkey has close economic ties, and Ukraine. He can point to the agreement negotiated with the UN on the sea transport of Ukrainian grain across the Black Sea as a success. On Thursday, Turkey promised Kyiv support for the reconstruction of infrastructure. Zelenskyy asked Guterres to grant UN access to Ukrainian citizens deported to Russia, his presidential office’s website said. He also sought help in releasing captured Ukrainian soldiers and rescue workers.
