Over the weekend, further clashes broke out in various places in the Belgorod region between Russian security forces and resistance organizations fighting for Ukraine.

On June 1, for example, fighters believed to be part of the RDK Russian Volunteer Corps and the organization Freedom of Russia, or LSR for short, succeeded in temporarily attacking a border post and other administrative buildings and taking some of them under their control. As a result, thousands of people fled in panic from the region, which is located in south-west Russia directly on the Ukrainian border.

Since then, there have been repeated attacks in which, according to Polish media reports, the Polish volunteer corps is said to have been involved. Local media in Belgorod also reported ongoing attacks on the evening of June 5th. According to the Institute for the Study of War, the hesitant Russian response suggests that there is still no agreement on how to respond to border violations.

Alexander Nezorov, who was a deputy in the Russian State Duma between 1993 and 2007 and was considered a confidante of Putin in the 2012 elections, shared on his Telegram channel a map of the alleged territorial gains that the resistance fighters are said to have already made in Belgorod.

Russian and Polish resistance fighters are said to have already taken control of various cities in the Belgorod region.

He also sharply criticizes the governor of the region, whom he accuses of “record-breaking mediocrity” in his reaction. Nezorov has been one of the loudest critics from Russian ranks since the beginning of the war – in early 2023 a Moscow court sentenced him to eight years in prison if he were to return to Russia.
