Russian President Putin has written a letter to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on the occasion of North Korea’s Liberation Day. In it, he said that the closeness between the two countries will help to strengthen security in the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia region and will help the interests of both sides. North Korean media reported that Putin has said that creative efforts will be made to expand relations between the two countries.
Kim Jong Un has also written to Putin in response. In his letter, Kim mentioned that the friendship between Russia and North Korea was formed by defeating Japan, which occupied the Korean Peninsula in the Second World War, and cooperation, support, and military coordination between the two countries have strengthened to an unprecedented level in order to overcome the enemy’s army. Although Kim generally referred to the enemy in his letter, he is thought to have meant the United States and its allies.

Kim also said that cooperation between Russia and North Korea will further develop based on the agreement signed in 2019. This letter has now created a stir in the international community. As the Ukraine-Russia war has been going on for over 6 months, North Korea has sided with Russia in this war. North Korea voted against a United Nations resolution condemning the war. Similarly, North Korea recognized Donetsk and Luhansk as separate states in eastern Ukraine.
Despite the various economic sanctions against Russia due to the war in Ukraine, Russia has not stopped its military activities. Putin’s letter has raised the question of whether North Korea, which has been threatening missile tests and nuclear weapons tests from time to time, will support Russia in the war in Ukraine.
