New York: The United States has imposed sanctions on close relatives of Russian President Vladimir Putin, including two daughters. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s family and other major US banks have been added to the sanctions list.
The move comes after news broke that Russia had carried out a massacre in Bucha, near the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.
Putin’s daughters Katerina Vladimirovna Tikhonova and Maria Vladimirovna Vorantsova are currently under U.S. sanctions. The U.S. has made it clear that Putin’s adult children are being denied all rights to their property and property.
The U.S. says Tikhonova is a tech executive associated with the Russian government’s defense sector. At the same time, the U.S. says Voronsova is a genetic researcher who oversees genetic research conducted by the Russian government. U.S. officials say they are managing several of Putin’s assets.
“We have indications that Putin and his allies and family members have secretly invested their illicit assets, including in the United States, so such actions are necessary,” a U.S. government spokesman told the BBC.
Russia has denied the allegations in a statement issued Friday stating “Similar, baseless allegations concerning Russia’s intelligence have been made more than once.
Russia has accused Ukraine of fabricating images without evidence.
When the Russians took control of Bucha, satellite images of the massacre, including civilians, were big news internationally, but on Wednesday Putin responded by calling it a “brutal and despicable provocation by the Ukrainian government.”
U.S. President Joe Biden on Wednesday described the Bucha assassination as a “major war crime.” “The nations of the world must stand up to these war criminals,” Biden added.
