NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told a German newspaper on Sunday that the war in Ukraine would last for years and that the West should be prepared to continue its support for Ukraine in this war.
US, European and NATO forces have been providing arms and economic assistance to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
Meanwhile, Jens Stollenberg was interviewed by a German newspaper.
“The war is likely to last for many years. The West must be prepared to support Ukraine in this war,” Stoltenberg said.
“I urge the West not to suspend its support for Ukraine,” he said. We must provide not only military support, but also energy and food aid. Despite the high cost of war, we must not let Ukraine weaken. But that can not be compared to the price that Ukrainians have to pay with so many lives every day.
Perhaps, if Putin’s military goals succeed, the damage will be far greater than the cost of the war, “he warned.
Stollenberg said that by providing Ukraine with additional weapons and modern weapons, the country could reclaim its eastern part from Russia and win the war.
He also noted that Russia has been making steady progress over the past few months in achieving its military goals.
Asked if people should be afraid of Russia’s nuclear capabilities, Stoltenberg said NATO did not see a high level of readiness in Russia’s nuclear forces.
“However, Russia’s nuclear attack is dangerous and irresponsible,” he said. “Putin must know that nuclear war cannot be won and will never be fought,” Stoltenberg said.
The war has also disrupted supply chains for some exports, including oil and grain, which have pushed up inflation, which has caused deep political problems for Democrats in the United States as the midterm elections approach.
Ukraine’s defense minister has called on leaders of 50 countries to provide security equipment and weapons. Russian forces have reportedly repulsed new attacks in the east.
