The Ukrainian defense minister issued an extraordinary call to his people: “Anyone who can hold a weapon, let him join the war.” This is after a law was passed in the country yesterday that allows citizens to carry weapons for self-defense.

Recall, the Ukrainians have already recruited all the reserve forces from the ages of 18-60, and now it seems that they are desperate and want to increase the forces.

Ukrainian President in addressing the Russian people

In an attempt to stop the fighting, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zalansky addressed the Russian people in a direct speech in Russian. In his speech, Zlansky said that “those who can stop the war are among you.”

Fighting on the border

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Border Police soldiers say they are currently fighting Russian forces in the Kopani and Ivanovo Kherson border areas. According to them, 3 Ukrainian soldiers and others were wounded. They claim that so far 50 Russian soldiers have been killed in the fighting in eastern Ukraine.

Earlier in the Ukrainian Interior Ministry announced that one person was killed and another was injured in the Kiev region following the Russian bombings and that near Odessa 7 people were killed and seven others were injured.

All this against the background of the advance of Ukrainian tanks advancing towards the city of Mariupol, one of the main cities in the separatist province of Donetsk.

The Ukrainians – we shot down planes, the Russians – we neutralized you

Earlier today, the Ukrainians claimed that they shot down 5 Russian planes and a helicopter, and then updated the number to six planes. While the Russians denied the claim, claiming for their part that they had neutralized the air defense systems of the Ukrainian army.

As you may recall, tonight began Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine, which many feared for months.

Ukrainians say the Russians have invaded the country from the Russian-Belarusian border and from the Crimean peninsula, which was annexed to Russia in 2014. The Pentagon also estimates that the Russian army entered Belarus, when CNN published images of convoys of military vehicles coming from the country.

Russia has reportedly fired missiles at several cities. Echoes of explosions were heard in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine and Kharkov. The capital’s airport is evacuated from people and staff. Russia has announced that it has launched a joint offensive and that Russian forces have been launched from the sea in Odessa and Mariupol in southern Ukraine.

In recent hours, mortars have been fired at the Ukrainian city of Lviv. And further explosions were reported in the city of Mariupol.

Meanwhile, convoys of Ukrainians were seen leaving the capital Kiev in their car in an attempt to escape the fighting, causing huge traffic jams on the way out of the city.

Alarms also in Poland

Alarms were also sounded in the Polish town of Medika. The town functions as a border crossing between Poland and Russia.
