Ukraine’s EU accession is not timely

During his usual Friday interview on Kossuth Radio, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán spoke primarily about Ukraine’s accession to the EU and Hungary’s sovereignty.

“It is a mistake that the EU Commission is urging the prime ministers to put Ukraine’s EU accession on the agenda.” Instead of immediately starting accession negotiations, a strategic partnership agreement with Ukraine should first be drawn up for a period of 5-10 years be closed, suggested Orbán. During this period, Ukraine could be brought closer to the Community. The EU should not repeat the same mistake it once made with Turkey. The Turks were promised decades ago that they could gain membership; Today all sides are just frustrated.

No answer to many questions

“There are many questions to which we do not know the answer: Ukraine is at war and has a different legal system than a peaceful country. So we cannot say whether Ukraine meets the constitutional criteria for joining the EU, how big the country is, since part of it is under Russian occupation, or how large its population is, since people are constantly on the run.

“We also cannot say what consequences the integration of Ukrainian agriculture would have on farmers in the community,” Orbán said. In Hungary, this would likely threaten the existence of hundreds of thousands of farms.

No EU decision without Hungary

“It is foreseeable that there will be no agreement on the issue of Ukraine’s EU membership,” the Prime Minister warned the EU Commission. The Commission must take responsibility for a poorly prepared summit. Orbán pointed out that the EU’s founding treaty does not contain the word veto. Certain issues can only be decided if all member states agree.

“It’s not about someone making a decision and Hungary vetoing it, but about the fact that there is no decision without Hungary. The EU is not in Brussels, it is the bureaucrats. The EU is in Budapest and Warsaw and Paris and Berlin.” Hungary has every right to support a decision only if it also corresponds to Hungarian interests.

Support outside the EU budget

It is also unknown how much money will be needed to rebuild Ukraine and where it will come from. Hungary proposes to provide aid to Ukraine in a transparent manner outside the EU financial framework. A separate intergovernmental agreement could establish a financial fund to support Ukraine, to which each country would contribute at its own discretion.

The EU has already given Ukraine more than 100 billion euros in weapons and cash. “If we had used this money for the development of Europe, the European economies would be in better shape,” emphasized Orbán.

“We should set up a special fund to support Ukraine, into which each country can contribute at its own discretion.”

Prevent influence from abroad!

At the heart of every political debate is national sovereignty, which in short means that only Hungarians can decide Hungary’s fate. Nevertheless, there are repeated attempts by the “dollar left” to intervene. Foreign countries are trying to influence the decisions of countries like Hungary. Currently “the USA wants to push us into war in Ukraine,” said Orbán. There are also economic lobby interests behind this.

Everyone who cares about Hungary’s independence and sovereignty and who wants to support the government in its difficult struggles is needed. Orbán therefore asked everyone to “take a few minutes for the country” and answer the questions of the National Consultation. It must not happen again that only after the elections do citizens find out how millions of dollars were used by the left to influence the free decisions of voters. The protection of national sovereignty requires Parliament to make some serious decisions so that the path to attempts at intervention in the future is blocked.
