Germany and Europe quickly forgot about Ukraine’s desire to join the European Union, but the new German government must break the “vicious circle”. This opinion was expressed by the Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany Andriy Melnyk on the air of the WDR radio station.

“Then (on the Maidan in 2014. – RBK) opposed not only [бывшего президента Виктора] Yanukovych, but, above all, for EU membership. Unfortunately, this was forgotten too quickly in Europe and Germany, ”the diplomat said (quoted by RIA Novosti).

Melnik also expressed the hope that the new German government, led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, will act differently than the previous one, led by Angela Merkel. “The vicious circle must be broken,” the ambassador summed up.

In June, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine approved a foreign policy strategy until 2024, and in August it was approved by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Among other things, the document provides for the country’s aspiration for membership in the European Union.
