Russian officials reported on Monday, August 3, that a drone attack in the Black Sea resort of Gelendzhik killed at least six people, including three children. Approximately 40 others were injured in the strike, which occurred in the southern Krasnodar region.
Social media videos verified by Reuters showed a drone slamming into a busy beach area near the town of Gelendzhik, resulting in a loud explosion. Local authorities stated that a specialist medical disaster team was sent to the scene of the blast at the Arkhipo-Osipovka holiday village, which is part of the broader Gelendzhik resort area. The health ministry reported that 21 people, including three children, were rushed to the hospital, with nine individuals in serious condition.
Russian Official Response and Allegations
Veniamin Kondratyev, the governor of the Krasnodar region, described the event as a tragedy in a statement on Telegram. Kondratyev characterized the incident as a deliberate attack by the Kyiv regime on the civilian population, asserting that the target had no connection whatsoever to military infrastructure.
In a separate, earlier statement, Kondratyev mentioned falling drone fragments, a term typically indicating that Russian air defenses had intercepted a drone. It remains unclear if electronic jamming or other defense methods were used to alter the drone’s course before it hit the beach. Additionally, Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, was cited by the TASS state news agency as accusing Ukraine of employing terrorism.
